South Park & Facebook News
A South Park Facebook episode was probably long overdue. This may not be life altering news, but it is definitely worth hearing about.
This South Park Facebook episode continued the show’s tradition of bashing fads and people getting hysterical over them. Usually, the kids have to stop the mentally challenged adults in their town when they take things too seriously, but the kids and adults alike were sucked into Facebook – except for one of them. In the prelude to the program’s 200th show, the South Park Facebook episode took aim at Facebook, Internet friend making, the filthy Chat Roulette – and even Jim Cramer and Tron.
Facebook took over the lives of everyone in town, including Kyle, Cartman and Kenny. Only Stan – this week’s designated voice of reason to be mad/bored at everything – stayed out of it, until everyone else forced him in. Yet when he tried to get out, he literally got sucked into the Web site.
This part of the South Park Facebook episode turned into a Tron parody. Although Tron is a pretty old target for satire, it is about to get current again when the sequel comes out in December. Since the first trailer was just released weeks ago, this likely gave Matt Stone and Trey Parker the inspiration – although this Tron world is filled with annoying Facebook friends and Yahtzee, instead of bike races.
The title of the episode “You Have 0 Friends” comes from a lonely Facebook kid who Kyle adds to his friend list out of pity. But the South Park Facebook episode showed that pretty much everyone on Facebook has no real friends. In the South Park world, Internet friends are nothing more than commodities – as Cartman proved.
The funnier parts of the show turned Cartman into a Jim Cramer parody, as he advised kids on who to buy Facebook stock in. Cramer is already a regular target on Comedy Central as it is, thanks to Jon Stewart’s constant ribbing. Compared to that, Cartman was far more merciful, if that’s possible – but they spared no expense in showing what the new Chat Roulette phenomenon was really made of.
