William Porcher Miles

William Porcher Miles was born in South Carolina on July 4, 1822. The man was passionate States’ Rights advocate and southern secessionist. The people from this chain were also known as the fire eaters. In the beginning he was interested in politics and that’s the reason he studies law during his academic years. He was also knows as a talented mathematics professor at the College of Charleston. He served the college for 8 years from 1843 to 1855. Miles raised his voice on the sectional issue as the problem started to shake South California politics. Miles was against the Compromise of 1850 as well as the Wilmot Proviso. In 1855, he won the election for the mayor of Charleston. He also represented South Carolina at the confederate convention in Montgomery.
