This answer is a tricky one. Most people get their nicknames a number of ways. Ulysses S. Grant got his nickname from two ways. Most historians or websites frequently mention one, but not the other.

Reason #1: Ulysses S. Grant made this statement during the American Civil War: He said, “No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender.”

Reasion #2: His name’s initials. He could often be called U.S. Grant (patriotically) and his famous statement on “unconditional surrender” is another U.S. set of initials.
