Weird Presidential Nicknames
Some of our past presidents had some really weird nicknames that were not so presidential sounding. Here are some examples:
-Andrew Jackson was called ‘Old Hickory’ -- When he would lead his Tennessee militia men back from New Orleans he would let wounded men use his horse, so he basically walked the whole way back, now that’s tough!
-Ulysses S. Grant was called ‘Unconditional Surrender’ -- I studied the civil war a ton, and this tidbit got by even me. Although it is an obvious nickname I believe it wasn’t all over the newspapers who were more prone to call him ‘butcher’ because of the way he used his troops like a blunt weapon. Oddly enough his initials matched the nickname.
-William Henry Harrison was called ‘Tippecanoe’ -Henry led his forces against the natives in a battle at a place called Tippecanoe in 1811. Pretty straight forward, huh?
-Zachary Taylor was called ‘Old Rough and Ready’ -- Although he had very little education he was always up for a challenge. He served in the Indian Wars and the Mexican-American war.
-Grover Cleveland was called ‘Uncle Jumbo’ -- He was a rather large man, so the nickname stuck. He had a secondary nickname of Veto Man, I wonder how he got that?
