Southwest & $200,000 Fine
Southwest Airlines is being hit with a hefty fine for bumping passengers off oversold flights. Southwest’s actions are a violation of Federal airline rules, and the airline now has to pay a $200,000 fine.
A review of passenger complaints by the Transportation Department revealed that Southwest often does not pay the bumped passengers in a timely manner and fails to give the passengers written notices of their rights.
Airlines are supposed to first ask for volunteers to be bumped from the flights. They are also supposed to receive a statement of their rights and a compensation for giving up their seat of up to $800. Compensation can be in the form of cash, check or travel voucher.
Southwest bumped over 13,000 passengers last year. This figure is one of the largest. Southwest can waive $90,000 of the fine if they do not violate the rules again next year. They can also use $20,000 of the fine to find ways to improve their current practices.
Brandy King, a spokesperson for Southwest, said in a statement, “We take every violation seriously and are working to improve our procedures to ensure full compliance with DOT regulations and to provide the best possible experience for all of our customers.”
