Science Fiction Became Reality

Science fiction, no matter how far fetched it may seem upon publication, often becomes reality. Writers of the genre have let their imaginations go into strange futuristic places– and yet the crazy thing is that they’re often within a realm of reality. So many science fiction stories have incorporated technology that would be inconceivable in that moment. Yet, as the speed of technology continues to increase, many of these science fiction stories are becoming reality.

Robots

Maybe Asimov didn’t predict the ipod, but he did foresee the rise of robots. Maybe not to the scary extreme, however, the prevalence of robotics in our world is somewhat of a science fiction feat.

Cloaking Devices

We all are familiar with the famous words, “Beam me up Scotty!” As futuristic as that concept may seem, scientists at Birmingham university are actually working on a cloaking device that would allow people and objects to disappear and reappear in different locations. Dr. Shuang Zhang made the announcement of their progress in March of this year.

Crime Predicting Technology

Similar to Minority Report, crime predicting technology is becoming a possibility. Developed by Richard Berk, the crime predicting software tracks an individual’s criminal history, location and other data and is supposed to give a good estimate as to when they will commit their next crime. They are currently testing the software out in Washington DC now.

Living Digitally

We may not have holograph rooms yet, but we’re all living online. And games like Second Life are allowing our worlds of fantasy and reality come together. We can be entirely different people and have entirely different lives thanks to technology.

I don’t think it’s too surprising that much of science fiction has become reality. In a way it’s the innovative thought of the authors that paved the way for other technically minded people to make into reality.
