In a crime that led Lt.-Gen Andre Deschamps, Chief of the Air Staff (in the Canadian Forces), said “all Canadians are stunned by Williams’ crime”. Russel Williams had been given many important commands and missions, from flying the Prime Minister, to welcoming the Defense Minister, and even to welcome the Olympic Torch. When presented with the evidence against Russell Williams, photographed wearing the victims’ underwear, for example, he confessed. Russell Williams has pleaded guilty to the murders of two women, two sexual assaults, 80 counts of break & enter, theft of lingerie, all are among the charges. Russell Williams has been stripped of his rank, medals, and drummed out of the Canadian Forces. Russell faces two concurrent life sentences and he may very well never again set foot in the outside world.
Russell Williams made a statement on the crimes: “I have committed despicable crimes … betraying my family, my friends and colleagues and the Canadian Forces. I shall spend the rest of my life regretting that I have ended two vibrant, innocent and cherished lives”. Russell Williams has stated it himself as well as any other could. A betrayal for the Canadian Forces that shocked the nation, a guilty conscience that made no attempt to lawyer up and pleaded guilty, and two lives sorely missed.
