Five Wedding Bells: Chile’s Rescued Miners
Wedding Bells are going off! Five to be precise. Five of Chile’s rescued miners are getting the wedding they always wanted: a church wedding. Some of the five rescued miners were never married, others were long married before but only on official documents: they never held a formal church wedding. The story of dozens of trapped miners in Chile caught the attentions of the world. The miners spoke that God was with them in the mine. Considering the large number of trapped miners and the condition they were in, some claim it is a miracle that they all emerged unharmed. Some of their unusual actions and comments also stood out from ordinary events in a week where news was filled mostly with news of economic austerity measures of European governments being met with angry protests from those who wish to remain on the government payout. For the Roman Catholic Church, the story of the Pope receiving their flag is a much-needed distraction from recent scandals. For local evangelicals, who have captured a surprising percentage of the formerly Catholic country, the conversion of some of the miners has given voice to a vocal and fast growing minority in the country. Churches from all denominations would be happy to compete to receive the honor of holding a wedding for one of the five rescued miners now getting one and the miners can be sure to receive their dream wedding.
