One better question is if whoever was carrying the baby, and jumped away from “the devil” would be able to use that as a defense in court to avoid prosecution for criminal neglect of their child. The group was supposedly performing a seance designed to call out the dead to speak to themselves — a practice forbidden in the Judeo-Christian (and Islamic worlds) as “necromancy”.
