“Toy Story 3″ Highest-Grossing Animated Film
Toy Story 3 is the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
But some websites claim that Toy Story 3 is not really the highest-grossing animated film of all time. According to Disney, the third movie in the Pixar series about cowboy Woody, space ranger Buzz Lightyear and the toys’ owner, Andy, has crossed more than $920 million at box offices worldwide since opening June 18.
That means it edged out DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.’s “Shrek 2? to attain the top spot. Toy Story 3 also ranks as Disney’s fourth highest-grossing film of all time. Its top grossers are “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (2006) at $1.07 billion, “Alice in Wonderland” (2010) at $1.02 billion, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” (2007) at $961 million.
But why ‘Toy Story 3? Is Not Actually The Highest Grossing Animated Film of All Time as some sites claim? One simple reason: ticket price inflation.
The problem with Disney’s announcement about Toy Story 3 is that they don’t take into account ticket inflation over time or the fact that because Toy Story 3 is in 3-D, theater owners can charge as much as $5 more per ticket.
Box Office Mojo adjusts box office earning to account for inflation (though not 3-D price hikes). The site’s list only accounts for domestic earnings. On an unadjusted basis Toy Story 3 is the 11th highest earning film of all time and the second highest animated earner behind Shrek 2.
But adjust for inflation and Toy Story 3 becomes the 93rd highest grossing film of all time and only the 13th highest grossing animated film of all time. The No. 1 animated spot belongs to Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (released in 1937) which earned an inflation-adjusted $866 million at the domestic box office compared to $400 million for Toy Story 3.
None of this is meant to take anything away from Toy Story 3’s accomplishments at the box office. With an incredible 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Toy Story 3 is one of the best-reviewed films of all time. For children born after the first movie hit theaters in 1995 Woody and Buzz have become as iconic as Ken and Barbie who joined the duo in the latest film.
