2012 Movie: Apocalypse Predictions

(2012 Movie: Apocalypse Predictions)

The new 2012 movie is serious when it decided to use all of the fears and prophecies of 2012 as a marketing point. The 2012 film, starring John Cusack, has a startling budget of $200 million and ended it’s first trailer with a simple “Find out the Truth. Google Search: 2012″. Across the internet, many websites and forums have emerged with fearful talk of doomsday. Citing the Mayan calendar (despite the religion being extinct) which ends in 2012, many either claim the world will end, or go through some sort of a change, either physical or spiritual. Some cite a “Galactic Alignment”, some that Planet X, otherwise dubbed “Nibiru”, will collide with Earth.

NASA dismisses all of the claims:

“The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012.”

NASA does however, posit a possible cataclismic event for the 2011 to 2012 timeframe, one which most of the 2012 doomsday websites overlook: Solar Cycle 24. A NASA employee said back in 2007, that Solar Cycle 24 could have significant impacts on telecommunications, air traffic, power grids and GPS systems. However NASA has repeatedly stated that there is no possibility of it leading to any sort of doomsday scenario. An 1859 solar storm caused by a solar cycle shorted out telegraph wires, which lead to fires in North America and Europe.
