Wal-Mart Black Friday family: $400,000
The victim of a stampede at Wal-mart was a 6′5 giant, and his death by the dozens of surging shoppers shows how anyone could of been trampled to death. Jdimytai Damour was 34 when he was killed last year during the madness of “Black Friday”, when many shoppers go to retail stores expecting to get great deals. The catch is the limited supplies of many of the deals which leads to extreme competition between many bargain shoppers. That competitive rush led to the death of Jdimytai Damour, and his family wants Wal-mart to be prosecuted criminally for the crime. Walmart offered the the black friday victim’s family $400,000, but they rejected it as “shameful” and demand prosecution. However, District Attorney Kathleen Rice arranged a deal in which Walmart puts in security measures (such as staying open for 24 hours to prevent the buildup that caused the stampede) and pay a $1.2 million fine, in exchange for not having to admit criminal liability in the case. Andrew Libo speaking on behalf of the family of the black friday victim said, “The ability of Wal-Mart to dictate the results of this criminal investigation demonstrates the epitome of corporate arrogance.” He went on to insinuate that Walmart had bought it’s way out of a criminal investigation. This year consumers only plan to spend $682.74 on holiday-related shopping, whereas last year the total was $705.01. With the lower turnout, coupled with the new security measures, this Black Friday will have less people in line, hopefully less stampedes, and no more victims.
