Billy Powell Dead!

(AP) Keyboard player Billy Powell called 911 about 12:55 a.m. Wednesday saying he was having trouble breathing. Rescue crews performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m., said Orange Park Police Lt. Mark Cornett.

Powell, 56, who has a history of heart problems, missed a Tuesday appointment with his doctor for a cardiac evaluation. A heart attack is suspected. No autopsy will be performed because Powell’s cardiologist will sign the death certificate, Cornett said.

The Jacksonville-based band was formed in 1966 by a group of high school students — famously, it took its name from a P.E. teacher they disliked, Leonard Skinner. Powell joined the group around 1972, the year before they released their first album, “Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd.”

It became one of the South’s most popular rock groups, and gained national fame with such hits as “Free Bird,” “What’s Your Name” and especially “Sweet Home Alabama,” which reached the top 10 on the national charts in 1974.

The band was decimated on Oct. 20, 1977, when their chartered plane crashed in a swamp near McComb, Miss.

Six people were killed — lead singer Ronnie Van Zant; guitarist Steve Gaines; and his sister, vocalist Cassie Gaines; as well as an assistant road manager, the pilot and co-pilot.

Powell was one of the survivors.

Two years after the accident, Powell and fellow members Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Leon Wilkeson formed the Rossington-Collins Band. It broke up in 1982.

Powell was on hand again in 1991 when a revived version of the band put out a new album, “Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991″ and launched a tour in Baton Rouge, La., where the band was headed in 1977 when the plane crashed. Fans who kept their tickets from the canceled 1977 concert were admitted free.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

PETA Super Bowl Commercial

It’s crazy some of the extremes PETA will go to just to get their point across. This commercial was banned from the Super Bowl, I wonder why?

Michigan Man Breaks In, Then Calls 911!

(AP) Authorities in Michigan say a 24-year-old man broke into a gas station and called 911 on himself, claiming he wanted to go to jail to be with his incarcerated brother.

St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon tells the Times Herald of Port Huron that deputies obliged, arresting the man early Tuesday.

Authorities say the man called the emergency number about 4:30 a.m. from inside the gas station in Capac, a village northeast of Detroit. He said he had had broken in about 20 minutes earlier.

The man’s name wasn’t released pending an arraignment.

Playing For Change: “Stand By Me”

I thought this was a very inspiring and interesting video. They take street musicians from all over the world and mix their music together.

From the award-winning documentary, “Playing For Change: Peace Through Music”, comes the first of many “songs around the world” being released independently. Featured is a cover of the Ben E. King classic by musicians around the world adding their part to the song as it travelled the globe. This and other songs such as “One Love” will be released as digital downloads soon; followed by the film soundtrack and DVD in stores on 4.18.09.

Lebron James Joins Cleveland Browns?

A novel concept, what would happen if Lebron James joined the Cleveland Browns at Wide Receiver. We all know they could use some help after this year’s season. Lebron actually played high school football and got offers from USC, Miami, Michigan, and Ohio State, he says he still misses football.

Here is the clip:

Ryo Ishikawa, 17 year old Japanese player in PGA Tour

(AP) Ryo Ishikawa might have been more nervous reading a personal invitation from Arnold Palmer than when he won on the Japan Golf Tour at age 15 to become the youngest champion on any recognized tour.

Ishikawa, a 17-year-old sensation who already has risen to No. 60 in the world, has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational on March 23-26 at Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Fla.

Palmer, who has a history of recognizing international players before they achieve stardom, wrote to Ishikawa in December.

“I have been following your achievements in Japan and I am quite impressed with what you have accomplished at such a young age,” Palmer said in his letter. “I also understand that you have expressed an interest in taking your game to another level by playing some tournaments on the international scene with your eye on the future.

“This leads me to suggest that you might like to come to Florida next March and play in my Arnold Palmer Invitational.”

Ishikawa, who won the mynavi ABC Championship last year and finished fifth on the Japan money list, responded to the letter last week. He will get one of two exemptions that the PGA Tour commissioner reserves for international players.

“When I received your letter, I was so thrilled that my hands became shaky holding your letter,” Ishikawa wrote. “I am so honored to play your tournaments with such a great field. Although this is only my second year as a professional golfer and I need to work on a lot of things, it will be a great experience for my career. I will do my best.”

Tiger Woods is the defending champion at Bay Hill and could be back on tour by then. Woods has not played since knee surgery a week after winning the U.S. Open in June.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational will not be the PGA Tour debut for Ishikawa. He also is expected to receive a sponsor’s exemption to the Northern Trust Open next month at Riviera in Los Angeles, and Nikkansports reported Wednesday that he will play the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook a week before Bay Hill.

Ishikawa made history in 2007 as a 15-year-old freshman in high school by winning the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup, the youngest winner on a tour recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking.

He is known as the “Shy Prince” for his unassuming demeanor, but he already is among the most famous sportsmen in Japan. Along with his first victory as a pro, he was runner-up at the Japan Open and the prestigious Dunlop Phoenix, where past champions include Woods and Padraig Harrington.

Palmer’s invitation continues a tradition of spotting young talent and being among the first to invite them to PGA Tour events. Previous Bay Hill exemptions were given to two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal in 1990, and to a pair of three-time major champions Ernie Els of South Africa and Vijay Singh of Fiji who were playing the European Tour in 1993.
